Suvarnabhumi Airport is on what was formerly called Cobra Swamp (Nong Nguhao) in Racha Thewa located in Bang Phli (a district of Samut Prakan province) and Lat Krabang districts, Prawet and Bang Na in the eastern part of Bangkok.
Helmut Jahn, a US-based German-American architect, designed the terminal building. It was constructed by ITO JV. Suvarnabhumi Airport was the 4th largest single-building airport terminal in the world. The airport also had the tallest freestanding control tower in the world. It inherited the BKK airport code from Don Mueang International Airport after the previous airport stopped international commercial flights.
